Artist Statement

Oftentimes my art takes the viewer to another time and place, evoking peaceful and quiet thoughts: a porch swing, a cupboard of old quilts, barns and farm objects in fields, and roadside flowers. I believe that art awakens our emotions and renders us still to be receptive to the spirituality it imparts.

Bio

I have been photographing the surrounding countryside for many years. My love of the country is very apparent in all of my art: photography, watercolor, oil, acrylics, and mixed media. I am an award-winning photographer and my art has been accepted into juried shows. I won the Award of Excellence from the McGuffey Gallery in Charlottesville, VA, Purchase Award for a retirement community, The People’s Choice Award in a watercolor exhibit at the Charlottesville Courthouse and Honorable Mention in the Plains, VA show.  My paintings have been selected by the Culpeper Hospital and the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community for their permanent collections.

After retiring from my position as a human resources director in Washington, D.C., I moved to Culpeper, Virginia to enjoy and capture nature more fully in my art. I am a member of the Firnew Farm Artists’ Circle, Central Virginia Watercolor Guild, and the Virginia Watercolor Society.  My work has been published in the Washington Post newspaper in Washington, D.C., and the Virginian Piedmont Magazine. I photographed a featured story for Home Magazine, Charlottesville, VA, including the cover. One of my photographs was selected for a published book cover.  My art has been juried and exhibited in galleries in Virginia: Orange, Culpeper, Fairfax, Charlottesville, Madison, Gordonsville, Sperryville, Stanardsville, Louisa, Montpelier, Woodberry School, Art in the Mill in Clarke County, Bath County, and the Firnew Farm Artists’ Circle shows. My work has also been shown in establishments that showcase local artists work and I have served as a juror for the Orange County Fair.
